How long do mosquitoes live

Short answer

An adult mosquito usually lives a few weeks in summer. Females typically outlive males, so the male you never notice is often gone in a week or so, while the female that bites you may be around for two to several weeks. The big exception is the overwintering female. In some species she survives many months by waiting out the cold in a dormant state (see Overwintering females live much longer below).

Keep in mind that “how long a mosquito lives” can mean two different things: how long the adult flies around, or how long the whole animal exists counting the egg, larva, and pupa stages in the water. Both are covered below.

Adult lifespan

The adult stage is short, and it is not the same for both sexes.

Male mosquitoes generally live only about a week or two. They do not bite; they feed on nectar and plant sugars, mate, and die fairly quickly (University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension, 2007).

Female mosquitoes live longer. With enough food and reasonable conditions, a female can live up to a month and produce several batches of eggs during that time (University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension, 2007). Under summer conditions, adult mosquitoes broadly live in the range of a couple of weeks to about a month depending on species, temperature, humidity, and shelter (CDC, About Mosquitoes).

Two things drive that male-female gap. First, only the female takes a blood meal, because she needs the extra protein to develop eggs. Second, the female’s longer life gives her the time to find hosts, lay eggs, and repeat the cycle. Warm, humid weather tends to lengthen adult life, while cold, drought, and wind shorten it.

Overwintering females live much longer

The few-weeks figure describes the active summer generation. It does not describe the females that survive the winter.

In several species, mated females do not die in autumn. They enter a dormant state and shelter in protected spots such as sheds, culverts, hollow logs, and basements. Some mosquito species overwinter as blood-fed females and can survive for multiple months in this way (University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension, 2007). This dormancy, called diapause, is a well-studied behavior in Culex pipiens, a major carrier of West Nile virus, where adult females suspend reproduction and live through the cold season (Sim and Denlinger, 2008).

So the honest answer to “how long can a mosquito live” is: a summer adult lasts a few weeks, but an overwintering female can persist through most of a winter. For the seasonal side of this, see the overwintering guide.

The whole life is longer than you think

Counting only the adult undersells the full life of a mosquito, because most of that life happens in water before the adult ever flies.

Every mosquito passes through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In warm summer conditions the water stages can be fast. It takes roughly 3 to 10 days to complete the cycle from egg to adult, and in cooler conditions it takes longer (University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension, 2007). Some floodwater species also lay eggs that can sit in dry soil for months to years and hatch only when flooding arrives, which stretches the total timeline far beyond the adult’s few weeks.

Add the water stages to the adult stage and a single mosquito’s life, egg to death, commonly runs several weeks in summer and much longer for a female that overwinters. For the full stage-by-stage breakdown, see the mosquito life cycle.

Why lifespan matters for disease

Lifespan is not just trivia. It is central to whether a mosquito can spread disease at all.

A mosquito is not born infected. A female has to bite an already-infected host, take up the pathogen, and then survive long enough for that pathogen to multiply and move into her salivary glands before she can pass it on in a later bite. The lag between taking an infected blood meal and becoming able to transmit is called the extrinsic incubation period (Ohm and others, Parasites and Vectors, 2018).

That waiting period is often a week or more and gets longer in cooler weather. A mosquito that dies before the extrinsic incubation period is finished never becomes infectious. This is why a longer-lived female, and warm weather that speeds the pathogen along, both raise transmission risk (Kilpatrick and others, 2010).
