Day-biting vs night-biting mosquitoes

The short answer

The time of day you get bitten is a rough clue to which kind of mosquito bit you, and to which diseases are worth thinking about.

Mosquitoes in the genus Aedes, including the two most common human-biting species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, bite mostly in daylight, with the heaviest activity in the early morning and the late afternoon (University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute, 2024). These are the mosquitoes tied to dengue, Zika, and chikungunya (CDC, Dengue transmission).

Mosquitoes in the genera Culex and Anopheles bite mostly from dusk through the night. Culex is the main group behind West Nile virus in the US (University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute, 2024), and Anopheles is the group that carries malaria worldwide (CDC DPDx, Malaria).

This is a pattern, not a rule. A hungry mosquito of any kind will bite when it gets the chance, and biting times overlap more than the tidy split suggests. The caveats section below covers where the clue breaks down.

Day biters

Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever mosquito) and Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito) are daytime biters. Aedes albopictus is the more aggressive of the two and is most active in the early morning and late afternoon (University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute, 2024).

Field studies describe this as a two-peak, or bimodal, pattern: a burst of biting after sunrise and a second burst before sunset, with a quieter middle of the day. One diel-activity study of Aedes albopictus in North American habitats documented this morning-and-afternoon rhythm (Faraji and others, 2021). The CDC notes that Aedes species can bite during both the day and the night, so daylight is where the risk is concentrated rather than the only time a bite can happen (CDC, Dengue transmission).

These are the mosquitoes to associate with dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Dengue viruses are spread to people through the bites of infected Aedes species mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and to a lesser degree Aedes albopictus (CDC, Dengue transmission). Because they are active in the daytime, the usual advice to “go inside at dusk” does not protect you from them. Daytime protection is what matters.

Dusk and night biters

Culex and Anopheles mosquitoes work a different shift.

Culex mosquitoes, including the southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus, are primarily active at dawn, dusk, and nighttime, though they will also feed during the day (University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute, 2024). Culex is the main vector group behind West Nile virus in the US, which is why public health guidance stresses protection from dusk to dawn (CDC, West Nile virus prevention).

Anopheles mosquitoes are mostly crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) or nocturnal (active at night) (CDC DPDx, Malaria). This is the group that transmits malaria. Malaria is not established in most of the US, but Anopheles vectors are present here, and their after-dark biting habit is the reason bed nets are such a central malaria tool worldwide. In the US, the everyday relevance of night biting is nuisance biting and, in the case of Culex, West Nile virus risk.

Why timing matters for protection

Knowing the shift a mosquito works tells you when to be careful and when repellent earns its keep.

  • If you are outdoors in the morning or late afternoon, especially near where water collects around a home, you are in Aedes territory. Daytime repellent and covered skin matter here, not just evening precautions.
  • If you are outdoors from dusk into the night, you are in Culex and Anopheles territory. The CDC advises limiting time outdoors from dusk to dawn where West Nile virus is a concern, and covering up when you are out (CDC, West Nile virus prevention).
  • The repellent advice is the same across the clock. The CDC recommends insect repellents registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, with active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone, used as directed on the label (CDC, Preventing mosquito bites). Wearing long, loose sleeves and pants adds a physical barrier at any hour (CDC, West Nile virus prevention).

The practical takeaway: match your protection to when you are outside, and do not assume that avoiding the evening keeps you safe from the day-biting Aedes mosquitoes.

Caveats

The day-versus-night split is a useful starting point, not a guarantee.

  • The windows overlap. Culex quinquefasciatus is mainly a dusk-and-night biter but will also feed during the day (University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute, 2024), and Aedes species can bite at night as well as in daylight (CDC, Dengue transmission).
  • A hungry mosquito bites when it can. A female needing a blood meal is opportunistic. Shade, cloud cover, and being disturbed at rest can all prompt biting outside the “normal” window.
  • Indoor biting blurs the clock. Mosquitoes that get inside a home will bite whenever they find a host, including hours when they would otherwise be inactive outdoors. This is one reason Anopheles biting behavior is often split by researchers into indoor and outdoor feeding.
  • Species and region vary. Local mosquito communities, climate, and season all shift these patterns. Timing narrows the list of likely suspects; it does not confirm a species or a diagnosis.
