
The short answer
If you want your clothes to do real work against mosquitoes, aim for three things: cover skin, keep the fabric loose, and lean toward light colors. Long sleeves and long pants reduce the surface a mosquito can reach. Loose fit matters because a mosquito can push its mouthparts through fabric that is pressed flat against your skin, so a garment that stands off the body gives it nothing to bite into. Light colors help at the margins, because mosquitoes lock onto dark, high-contrast targets more readily than pale ones.
Clothing alone is not a force field. Mosquitoes find gaps, land on thin spots, and reach exposed hands, ankles, necks, and faces. That is why public health guidance pairs clothing with repellent on exposed skin and treats coverage as one layer in a stack rather than the whole defense (CDC, Preventing Mosquito Bites).
The single biggest upgrade you can make to ordinary clothing is permethrin. Clothing treated with permethrin does not just block bites, it actively repels and kills mosquitoes that land on the fabric, and the treatment survives repeated washing. Cover up
The plain move is to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when mosquitoes are active, which for most US species means dawn, dusk, and warm evenings (CDC, Preventing Mosquito Bites). Every patch of skin you cover is a patch a mosquito cannot reach without working through cloth first.
In heavy mosquito areas, close the gaps. Mosquitoes and ticks both exploit the openings at your ankles, wrists, and waist, so tucking your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks removes the easy entry points and leaves less bare skin at the cuffs. This tuck-in habit is standard advice for tick country and it works the same way against mosquitoes: fewer gaps, less exposed skin. Closed shoes and socks beat sandals for the same reason, since bare feet and ankles are common bite targets.
Coverage has limits. Your hands, neck, and face usually stay exposed, and those areas still need an EPA-registered repellent. Think of clothing as shrinking the target, not erasing it.
Loose and light
Two properties of a garment decide how well it resists bites: how it fits and how it is built.
Fit comes first. A mosquito’s proboscis is long enough to reach through thin fabric when that fabric is held tight against the skin. Extension entomologists put it bluntly: if the material fits tightly, the mosquito can bite through it (University of Florida IFAS, Gulf Coast Research and Education Center). Leggings, athletic tights, and thin fitted tops are the classic weak points. A looser cut keeps most of the cloth off your skin, so even where a mosquito lands it often finds only air beneath the fabric.
Construction comes second. A tightly woven fabric physically blocks the mouthparts from reaching skin, and thicker or denser material blocks more than thin, open weave (University of Florida IFAS, Gulf Coast Research and Education Center). The ideal, then, is the combination that sounds contradictory but is not: a garment with a tight weave worn in a loose fit. Dense cloth the mosquito cannot penetrate, hanging far enough off the body that it usually cannot reach anyway.
Color is a smaller, real effect. Mosquitoes use vision as well as smell and heat to home in on hosts, and they are drawn to certain colors. In a controlled study of Aedes aegypti, mosquitoes flew toward red, orange, black, and cyan after detecting the carbon dioxide in exhaled breath, while ignoring green, blue, purple, and white (National Eye Institute; Nature Communications, 2022). Human skin itself gives off a red-orange visual signal to their eyes, which is part of what they are tracking. The practical takeaway is modest but free: light, pale clothing is a less obvious visual target than dark black or navy, so when other factors are equal, lighter is the safer pick.
Permethrin-treated clothing
Permethrin turns ordinary clothing into an active deterrent. It is an insecticide bound to the fabric that repels and kills mosquitoes and ticks that contact it, and it is the only insecticide currently used for factory treatment of clothing (EPA, Repellent-Treated Clothing). You can buy garments pre-treated at the factory or apply an approved permethrin product to your own clothes, following the label exactly.
A few points decide whether it works and stays safe:
- It goes on fabric, never skin. Permethrin is intended for clothing and gear only. Do not apply it directly to skin, and let treated items dry fully before wearing them (National Pesticide Information Center).
- It lasts through washing. Applied correctly, permethrin binds tightly to fibers, so little comes off in the wash and the protection persists through repeated launderings (National Pesticide Information Center). Factory-treated garments generally hold up longer than home-treated ones.
- It only protects what it covers. Treated cloth shields the skin under it. Exposed hands, neck, and face still need a skin repellent for fuller coverage (EPA, Repellent-Treated Clothing).

Practical trade-offs in hot weather
The obvious objection to long sleeves and long pants is heat. In a US summer, covering up can feel worse than the bites. There are workable compromises.
Reach for lightweight, breathable long layers rather than heavy ones. Many outdoor and travel shirts and pants are cut loose, woven tightly enough to blunt bites, and made from thin, fast-drying, ventilated fabric that stays cooler than it looks. That loose-but-tight-weave combination is exactly what resists mosquitoes, so a well-chosen summer layer does double duty.
Light colors help twice over in heat: pale fabric is a weaker visual target for mosquitoes and reflects more sunlight, so it runs cooler than black or navy. If long sleeves are genuinely too much on a given day, cover what you can, tuck where it counts, and put repellent on the skin you leave bare. And if you spend real time outdoors in mosquito season, a set of permethrin-treated clothes is the highest-value option, because it lets you wear lighter, more comfortable layers while the fabric itself does the repelling.
