
Short answer
Spring is the highest-leverage time of year to deal with mosquitoes. Clearing out the small pools of water where mosquitoes breed, before the first broods hatch, prevents a whole summer of biting adults. Mosquitoes need standing water for two stages of their life cycle, and the larvae and pupae both live in that water (Source 1). Getting rid of the water before eggs hatch is the least costly and most effective step you can take (Source 1). A short walk around the yard in spring, repeated after each rain, does more than any amount of spraying later in the season.
Why spring matters
Mosquitoes are cold-blooded, and they generally do not feed in temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (Source 6). Through the cold months, many mosquitoes wait out winter either in sheltered hibernation or as winter-hardy eggs that stay dormant until conditions warm up (Source 6). As spring temperatures climb past that threshold, the first generation of the year begins to develop.
That timing is the reason spring work pays off. The life cycle is short. It can take as little as four days for a mosquito to go from egg to biting adult, and eggs can hatch in as little as a teaspoon of water (Source 3). If you empty the breeding sites before the first brood matures, you break the cycle at its cheapest point. If you wait until adults are flying, you are dealing with the hardest life stage to control (Source 4). Spring is your window to get ahead of the first generation instead of chasing every generation after it.
The spring checklist
Walk your property once and work through the list below. Anything that can hold water for more than a few days is a potential breeding site.
- Empty and scrub containers. Once a week, empty, scrub, turn over, cover, or throw away items that hold water, such as buckets, planters, flowerpot saucers, toys, trash and recycling cans, and birdbaths (Source 1). Scrubbing matters, because it removes eggs stuck to the inner walls of the container, not just the water (Source 1).
- Clean the gutters. Clean your gutters and make sure they drain well (Source 3). Clogged gutters hold water and leaf debris and are easy to overlook from the ground.
- Dump tarps and toys. Check tarps, plastic sheeting, wading pools, and children’s and pets’ toys, and tip out any water that has collected (Source 3). Pull tarps tight or store them so they stop pooling water.
- Check drains and low spots. Look for standing water in low areas of the yard, around downspouts, and near open plumbing vents, and clear or regrade what you can (Source 4). Refresh birdbaths, pet dishes, and pollinator water dishes with clean water every few days (Source 3).
- Treat water you cannot drain. For rain barrels, ponds, and other water you cannot empty, use a larvicide made from the naturally occurring bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, known as Bti, sold as dunks or bits (Source 2, Source 5). Bti targets only the larvae of mosquitoes, black flies, and fungus gnats, has no toxicity to people, and does not harm honey bees or other insects (Source 2). - Repair screens. Repair or replace window and door screens that have tears or gaps, so the mosquitoes that do hatch stay outside (Source 3).
Watch the weather
Two weather signals tell you the season is starting. The first is temperature. Once daytime temperatures settle above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, mosquitoes begin to feed and the overwintering generation becomes active (Source 6). A warm spell, even an early one, can wake them up.
The second is rain. Spring rain refills exactly the containers, low spots, tarps, and clogged gutters on the checklist above, and fresh standing water is what egg-laying females look for (Source 1). Because a mosquito can go from egg to adult in about four days (Source 3), the useful habit is to repeat the walk-around after every soaking rain, not just once at the start of spring. Tip out what filled up, and you deny the next brood its nursery.
Set up for the year
While you are in prevention mode, get your personal protection ready so you are not scrambling in July.
- Stock repellent. Keep an EPA-registered repellent on hand. Products containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), IR3535, or 2-undecanone are effective when used as directed on the label (Source 5).
- Treat clothing. Permethrin is registered for treating clothing and gear, not skin (Source 5). You can buy permethrin to apply yourself or buy clothing pretreated with it. Treated clothing keeps working through repeated washings but should be retreated per the product label (Source 5). Do not apply permethrin products directly to skin (Source 5).
- Cover up. When mosquitoes are active, long sleeves and long pants add a simple physical barrier alongside repellent (Source 4).
